Thabo Mbeki Foundation offices burgled, cash stolen

The offices of former president Thabo Mbeki’s foundation in Killarney, Johannesburg, have been burgled, with electrical appliances and R2 200 in petty cash stolen.
The break-in at the Thabo Mbeki Foundation offices at Oxford Road was reported to police, with a case opened at Hillbrow police station.

According to information received about the incident, the stolen items include a television, microwave, laptop and hard drive.
A police officer who did not want to be named said the suspects also allegedly broke into a built-in safe and pilfered R2 200 in petty cash.
The cop said no one was on the premises at the time of the break-in.

The detective , who is privy to the case, said the alarm system was reportedly not working because of a power outage.
“The building does not have a solar power system,” said the bobby.

The further said that the circumstances surrounding the break-in, including how the suspects gained entry and whether any arrests have been made, were not immediately clear.

Speaking to Africa Daily, Thabo Mbeki Foundation spokesperson Bongekile Skosana confirmed the burglary.
“The Thabo Mbeki Foundation confirms that a break-in occurred at its
Killarney offices, during which several items were unlawfully removed from
the premises.
The matter has been reported to the South African Police Service, and the
Foundation is working closely with the relevant authorities as part of the
ongoing investigation,” she said.
Skosana said the foundation has , as a result of the break in, taken immediate steps to assess
the impact of the incident and to reinforce measures aimed at protecting
the foundation’s assets.
“Given the ongoing investigations, the Foundation is unable to provide
further details currently. We remain committed to the preservation and
protection of our assets and will provide further information should it
become appropriate to do so,” she said.
