Chris Brown avoids immediate jail time over London nightclub attack

American R&B star Chris Brown has escaped immediate imprisonment after receiving an eight-month suspended sentence for attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub.

The 37-year-old singer appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, where he was sentenced after admitting to affray in connection with the February 2023 incident at Tape nightclub.

Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was also convicted after pleading guilty to his role in the case.

The two men had initially contested charges of attempted grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm before admitting guilt to the lesser charge in July.

During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner condemned the attack as a serious act of public violence, noting that Brown had struck Diaw on the head twice with a bottle during the incident.

Although Brown will not immediately be sent to prison, he could face imprisonment if he commits another offence that triggers the suspended sentence.

The singer’s supporters gathered outside the London court early on Monday morning, with some arriving before the building opened.

After the proceedings, Brown thanked the judge and acknowledged his fans in the public gallery as he left the courtroom.

The case dates back to February 2023, but Brown was only arrested in May 2025 when he returned to the UK for the first time since the incident.

His arrest initially cast uncertainty over his Breezy Bowl XX world tour after he was refused bail.

Brown was subsequently released after agreeing to provide £5 million in security, enabling him to continue with the tour.

The sentencing is the latest legal setback for the award-winning performer, whose previous controversies include a 2009 assault on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.

Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna and received five years’ probation for the offence.

He also admitted to assaulting a fan in 2013 after an incident in which he was accused of punching the man when he requested a photograph with the singer.

Despite his legal troubles, Brown remains a major figure in contemporary R&B and has won two Grammy Awards.
