The battle for a place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals gets underway on Tuesday night when Mamelodi Sundowns welcome Golden Arrows to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm, with the Brazilians determined to keep their hopes of adding another domestic trophy alive after suffering a disappointing early exit from the CAF Champions League, a competition they won last season.

With the MTN8 already in their trophy cabinet, Sundowns will be looking to restore confidence among their supporters by progressing to the last four of the Carling Knockout.

However, standing in their way are a Golden Arrows side that has already demonstrated its ability to trouble the Tshwane giants this season.

Abafana Bes'thende booked their quarter-final ticket in impressive fashion after demolishing Chippa United 4-0 in the last 16, underlining their potential to cause an upset against the reigning league champions.

Sundowns, meanwhile, had to work hard to secure their passage into the quarter-finals, edging Marumo Gallants 1-0 before producing an emphatic 4-1 victory over Durban City in the Betway Premiership at the weekend.

The result against Durban City provided the Brazilians with a timely confidence boost ahead of Tuesday's encounter.

The Tshwane giants will also be keen to make the most of their home advantage as they pursue another domestic cup triumph.

However, they cannot afford to underestimate Arrows, who have already shown that they can make life difficult for the Brazilians.

ARROWS HAVE ALREADY SHOWN THEIR TEETH

The two teams have met three times this season across the MTN8 and Betway Premiership, with Sundowns winning twice and Arrows claiming one victory.

Arrows stunned the Brazilians with a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final, raising questions about Sundowns' ability to overcome their disciplined opponents.

Sundowns responded in the return leg with a thrilling 3-2 victory, advancing to the MTN8 final on the away-goals rule after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate.

The Brazilians then defeated Arrows 2-1 in their Betway Premiership encounter, further demonstrating their resilience against the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.

The recent meetings suggest that Tuesday's clash could be another closely contested affair, particularly with a semi-final berth at stake.

SUNDOWNS DOMINATE HISTORICAL RECORD

Historically, Sundowns have enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture.

According to SuperSport's head-to-head statistics, the two sides have met 64 times across all competitions since the 2000/01 season.

The Brazilians have registered 37 victories, while Arrows have won 13 matches, with the remaining 14 encounters ending in draws.

Sundowns have also dominated their cup meetings, winning 10 of 13 encounters, compared with two victories for Arrows and one draw.

Despite that historical advantage, cup football often produces surprises, and Arrows will be hoping to upset the odds and book their place in the semi-finals.

LEAGUE POSITIONS FAVOUR THE BRAZILIANS

The teams also head into Tuesday's encounter with contrasting fortunes in the Betway Premiership.

Sundowns are on top of the league standings with 26 points from ten matches, having recorded eight victories and two draws without suffering a defeat.

They have scored 27 goals and conceded nine, giving them a goal difference of plus 18.

Arrows, meanwhile, occupy tenth position with eight points from nine matches. Their record stands at one victory, five draws and three defeats, with three goals scored and five conceded.

The gap between the two sides on the league table highlights the challenge facing the Durban-based outfit, although their cup performances suggest they should not be written off.

RAYNERS WARNS AGAINST COMPLACENCY

Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has warned his teammates against taking Arrows lightly, acknowledging that opponents often raise their performance levels when facing the Tshwane giants.

Rayners believes the Brazilians must be clinical in front of goal and take their chances early to avoid making the contest unnecessarily difficult.

The Bafana Bafana forward also acknowledged the unpredictable nature of knockout football, where one mistake can prove costly.

For Sundowns, the objective is clear: secure victory, reach the semi-finals and maintain their pursuit of domestic silverware.

Arrows, on the other hand, will be determined to frustrate the hosts and produce another memorable result against one of South African football's most successful clubs.

With a place in the last four up for grabs, both sides have plenty at stake.

Sundowns will enter the contest as favourites on paper, but Arrows have already proved this season that they possess the quality to challenge the Brazilians.

Tuesday night's showdown promises to be a stern test of Sundowns' cup ambitions and Arrows' determination to upset the established order.
