Where the story breaks

Editorial standards

The principles Africa Daily's journalists work to, and how to hold us to them.

These standards apply to everything Africa Daily publishes, on every platform. The editor is responsible for them. Editor: To be supplied.

Accuracy

We report what we can verify. We check facts, names, figures and quotations before publication, attribute information to its source, and distinguish clearly between what is known, what is alleged and what is opinion. When we make a mistake we correct it openly.

Fairness

We give people and organisations who are the subject of critical reporting a fair opportunity to respond before publication, and we report their response. We present competing views fairly and do not misrepresent them.

Independence

Our journalism is independent of political parties, government, advertisers and sponsors. No outside party decides what we cover or how. Staff do not accept payment, gifts or favours that could influence, or appear to influence, their work.

Sources

We name our sources wherever possible. We grant anonymity only when the information is in the public interest, cannot be obtained on the record, and the source faces a real risk of harm. An editor must know the identity of every anonymous source. We protect confidential sources.

Conflicts of interest

Journalists declare any personal, financial or political interest in a story to their editor and do not report on matters in which they have one. Where a conflict cannot be avoided, we tell readers.

News and opinion

News reports set out facts. Opinion and analysis are labelled as such, carry the writer's name, and represent the writer's own views. Opinion must still be based on facts that are true.

Children, privacy and harm

We take particular care when reporting on children, victims of crime and people in distress. We intrude on privacy only when there is a clear public interest, and we avoid causing unnecessary harm.

Corrections

We correct significant errors promptly. To report an error, please contact us.

The Press Code and complaints

Africa Daily follows the Press Code of Ethics and Conduct for South African Print and Online Media, administered by the Press Council of South Africa. If you believe we have breached the Code, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it. If you are not satisfied, you may lodge a complaint with the Press Ombud.
