Privacy notice

This notice explains how Africa Daily handles personal information, as required by the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

What we collect and why

• Newsletter. Your email address and, if you give it, your first name, with the date you agreed and the page you signed up on. We use this only to send you the newsletter. We also keep a copy of your sign-up in our own records, so that our newsroom can see where readers sign up and act on a request to remove you.
• Contact and advertising forms. The details you enter, so that we can respond or act on your message. We keep them in our own records, where only the editors and administrators of our newsroom can read them.
• Analytics. If you agree, information about the pages you read and the device you use, to understand which journalism is read.
• Advertising. Identifiers that let advertising partners show and measure adverts, which fund our journalism.
• Embedded media. If you play a video, the video service receives your IP address and device details.
• Server logs. Your IP address, the page requested and the time, recorded by our hosting provider and kept briefly for security and to keep the site running.
• Read counter. When you scroll three quarters of the way through a story, your browser tells us which story it was, so that we can rank Most read. Our server turns your IP address and browser details into a coded value, so that each reader counts once per story per day and one connection counts at most a few times. Your IP address and browser details are never stored. The coded values, and the random value that changes them every day, are deleted every night, so nothing links a reader from one day to the next. We keep only the number of reads of each story, which contains no personal information. The read counter sets no cookies and works the same whatever your cookie choices.

Our lawful basis

We send the newsletter and any other direct marketing only with your consent (POPIA section 69). Analytics and embedded media run only with your consent, which you give or refuse through our cookie settings. We show adverts because we have a legitimate interest in funding our journalism. We process form submissions to respond to your request, and server logs because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the site secure.

Security

We protect personal information with encryption in transit, restricted access and regular review of our systems. If a breach puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the Information Regulator.

Your rights

You may ask us to:

• confirm whether we hold information about you, and give you access to it
• correct or delete information that is inaccurate, out of date or no longer needed
• stop processing your information, including for direct marketing

You can withdraw consent at any time: unsubscribe using the link in any newsletter, or change your cookie choices with the "Cookie settings" button at the bottom of every page. To use any other right, contact us.
