Police officials have seized a cellphone from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s private family home in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday after serving him with a Johannesburg High Court search and seizure warrant.
According to a statement issued on Mchunu’s behalf by Sthembiso Mshengu on Tuesday, the warrant specifically identified the cellphone’s IMEI number.
Mchunu handed the handset to police in the presence of his attorney, in compliance with the court order.
“As a law abiding citizen and in the presence of his Attorney, Minister Mchunu handed over the handset in line with the directive of the court,” Mshengu said.
Mshengu said the seizure was the second time police had taken Mchunu’s communication devices without returning the first set.
“It must be noted that this is the second time the police have seized these communication tools without having returned the first set,” he said.
Mchunu has been on special leave since July 2025 after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made allegations of political interference and criminal infiltration within the criminal justice system, including allegations involving Mchunu. President Cyril Ramaphosa subsequently established the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations.
Mkhwanazi had alleged that Mchunu interfered in police investigations and was involved in the decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal. Mchunu has denied wrongdoing and has provided his account to Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating the allegations.
The Madlanga Commission is still investigating the allegations, with its final report expected in November 2026. President Ramaphosa has previously said Mchunu’s future would be considered in light of the commission’s work.
Mchunu is expected to address the latest developments and other matters involving his name in the coming weeks, according to Mshengu.
The statement did not provide further details about the investigation linked to Monday’s warrant or what information police are seeking from the cellphone.
