Alleged sextortion kingpin returns to court after teen’s suicide
Updated 1 min read

A 30-year-old man accused of running an international online sextortion and money laundering syndicate linked to the suicide of a teenage boy is expected to continue with his formal bail application in the Protea Glen Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, Ifeel Simango faces charges of extortion and money laundering following his arrest by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Orlando West, Soweto, on 15 July 2026.
Simango first appeared in court on 30 July, when the matter was postponed and he was remanded in custody pending his formal bail application.
The case stems from the death of a minor boy who was allegedly manipulated into sending explicit images of himself via WhatsApp to someone using a fake online profile.
Investigators allege that after receiving the images, the suspect demanded large sums of money from the victim and threatened to publish the content on social media if he failed to pay.
The victim allegedly transferred R232,919.38 into a PayPal account linked to Simango. Despite allegedly being informed of the victim’s suicidal thoughts, the suspect is accused of publishing the explicit images on Instagram.
The victim later died by suicide and reportedly left behind a note detailing the alleged extortion.
Mogale said investigators later traced the money from the PayPal account to multiple South African bank accounts.
She said an extensive forensic digital investigation has since uncovered the international reach of the alleged syndicate.
“So far, investigators have identified 52 additional victims worldwide, including two South African victims believed to have been targeted by the same syndicate,” Mogale said.
The matter continues before the Protea Glen Magistrate’s Court.
