Police confirm missing Vosloorus spaza shop owner has been found as investigations continue

An Ekurhuleni spaza shop owner who disappeared about a month ago, Mazwi Mpumelelo Kubheka, has been located.

Police confirmed the development in a brief statement issued on Saturday evening, following earlier reports that the 27‑year‑old businessman had allegedly been abducted. Kubheka was last seen on April 2 in Marimba Gardens, Vosloorus, where his spaza shop operates.

In a statement, SAPS said: “Lt‑Gen Mthombeni has confirmed that Mazwi Kubheka, who was reportedly kidnapped following a spaza shop‑related dispute, has been found and is currently at the Vosloorus police station. He reportedly arrived at the station on his own this evening. Investigations continue.”

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said Kubheka’s identity was verified after he presented himself at the station. She added that he would undergo medical evaluation before being reunited with his family.

“At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the missing person case remain unclear, and investigations are continuing. SAPS thanks the community, media and all stakeholders for assisting with the dissemination of information and missing person alerts,” Nevhuhulwi said.

Previously, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi revealed that intelligence services had been brought in following Kubheka’s disappearance. Lesufi said the matter was treated seriously due to growing concerns over missing persons, suggesting the possibility of organised criminal activity.
