Mamelodi Sundowns have limped into the semi-finals of the Carling Knockout after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane on Tuesday night.

It was a moment of brilliance from Iqraam Rayners that made the difference, with the striker finding the back of the net in the 69th minute to break the deadlock in a closely contested encounter.

Abafana Bes'thende arrived in Tshwane highly motivated following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership, but they struggled to reproduce the same attacking form against the reigning domestic heavyweights.

Instead, the KwaZulu-Natal outfit produced a disciplined defensive performance that frustrated the Brazilians for much of the match.

Sundowns, who were expected to dominate proceedings on home soil, found it difficult to break down an Arrows side that remained organised and determined to keep their opponents at bay.

Despite enjoying periods of possession, Masandawana struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities as Abafana Bes'thende stood firm at the back.

The first half ended without a goal, with Arrows having done enough to frustrate the hosts and keep their hopes of progressing to the next round alive.

The pattern continued after the restart, with Arrows maintaining their defensive discipline and denying Sundowns the space they needed to unlock their stubborn rearguard.

As the match progressed, the possibility of extra time appeared increasingly likely, with neither side managing to find the breakthrough.

However, Sundowns eventually found a way through in the 69th minute when Rayners finished beautifully after connecting with a well-timed pass from Antonio van Wyk.

The goal proved decisive, handing the Brazilians the advantage they had been searching for and leaving Arrows with little time to recover.

Despite their elimination, Abafana Bes'thende can take pride in a spirited performance that pushed one of the country's most formidable sides to the limit.

For Sundowns, the victory keeps their hopes of adding another domestic cup trophy to their cabinet alive, although their performance will leave the technical team with plenty to consider as they turn their attention to the semi-finals.

The Tshwane giants will now await the outcome of the remaining quarter-final fixtures to discover their opponents in the last four as they continue their pursuit of the Carling Knockout crown.
