A 32-year-old teacher has been granted R1,000 bail after allegedly raping a 17-year-old learner inside his vehicle in Limpopo.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the alleged incident took place on 2 September 2026 at about 7.30pm in the Ritavi policing area.
The learner allegedly received a call from the teacher asking her to collect stationery on behalf of a friend. He allegedly told her that he would wait for her along the street.
When she arrived, the teacher allegedly asked her to get into his vehicle before driving a short distance and stopping along the roadside.
The teacher allegedly moved to the back seat, where the learner was sitting, and raped her.
Ledwaba said the learner did not immediately tell her mother about the alleged rape because she was afraid.
She reported the matter to her school principal on 7 September, after which police were notified and she was taken to a local hospital for a medical examination.
The case was subsequently transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Tzaneen for further investigation.
The teacher was arrested and appeared in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was granted R1,000 bail.
He is expected back in court on 12 November 2026.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the alleged rape, saying teachers occupy a position of trust and responsibility towards learners.
“It is disturbing that a person entrusted with the education and safety of our children could allegedly commit such a heinous act against a learner,” Scheepers said.
He said police would ensure the case received the necessary support to facilitate a successful prosecution.
Scheepers also encouraged victims of sexual offences to report incidents to police without delay.
Investigations are continuing.
