The turmaround strategy implemented aimed at restoring the depleted historic Zebediela Citrus Estate is bearing some positive results. This is according to Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba who has expressed her satisfaction after her visit at the estate.
Ramathuba conducted an unannounced visit to the farm, about four months after her first inspection, to assess progress since the launch of the recovery programme.
The turnaround initiative, spearheaded by the Bjatladi Community Property Association (BCPA) in partnership with Whiphold, began with the planting of beans to restore nitrogen levels in the soil in preparation for the cultivation of new orange trees.
Addressing workers during her visit, Premier Ramathuba said she was impressed by the progress made, particularly the number of jobs that had already been created.
“During our first visit, we expected that by this stage the project would have created at least 70 jobs for the people of Zebediela and surrounding communities. To our surprise, we found that more than 700 people have already been employed. This completely dispels the myth that South Africans do not want to work on farms. I will sleep peacefully knowing that our people are earning an income from this farm,” she said.
The workforce at the estate, affectionately known as Dinamoneng, includes former employees as well as many young recruits who have joined the project with the shared goal of restoring one of South Africa’s largest citrus farms.
Farm Manager Ronny McKenzie encouraged workers to remain committed to the project and continue contributing to the province’s economic development.
“Today, as you have had the opportunity to meet your hardworking Premier, go back to the fields and put in even more energy, just as she does, towards building Limpopo Province. Let us build Limpopo together. Let us appreciate what this farm is providing and continue working hard to restore it,” said McKenzie.
BCPA Chairperson Lesley Makgaba said the progress made over the past few months has inspired confidence within the local community.
“Our working relationship with Whiphold remains strong, and we continue to work together to restore the farm to what it once was. Community members are beginning to see real progress, and we remain committed to ensuring the success of this project,” Makgaba said.
The Limpopo Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitor the implementation of the turnaround strategy to ensure the successful restoration of the estate, promote sustainable citrus production, create long-term employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth in the province.
Once regarded as one of South Africa’s flagship citrus producers, the revival of Zebediela Citrus Estate is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the agricultural sector and improving livelihoods in the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality.
