The family of 38-year-old Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo has confirmed that the body discovered during a police investigation into the deaths of women in Kempton Park is hers.
Moselakgomo disappeared last week after leaving her Kempton Park home to go for an afternoon run.
Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said her family made the positive identification at the Germiston mortuary on Monday.
Acting national police commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili Dimpane has ordered police to intensify efforts to determine how Moselakgomo died and what happened to her.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Elizabeth during this extremely painful time. The loss of a loved one under such circumstances is devastating, and we assure the family that the SAPS will do everything within its powers to establish exactly what happened to Elizabeth and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Dimpane said.
Moselakgomo, who was known as a fitness enthusiast, left her eight-year-old daughter at home on Wednesday before setting off for her run.
Her disappearance later became part of a wider police investigation following the discovery of several women’s bodies in the Kempton Park area.
Mathe said Dimpane had assembled a multidisciplinary team of detectives and specialised police units to drive the investigations forward.
“The team is working around the clock to establish the circumstances surrounding each death, analyse available evidence, identify possible linkages where they exist and pursue all leads that may assist in bringing the investigations to a successful conclusion,” Mathe said.
Police are yet to determine whether the deaths are connected.
Dimpane has assured the public that the police will continue working to protect women and ensure that perpetrators of violence against women are brought before the courts.
“We will not rest until we have established the truth. Where there is evidence linking individuals to these crimes, we will pursue them relentlessly and ensure that they face the full might of the law,” Dimpane said.
Police have already arrested a suspect in connection with the discovery of the first woman’s body in July.
The suspect, who is believed to have been the victim’s boyfriend, remains behind bars while police continue with their investigation.
