Lekota’s son branded ‘drug addict and thief’ in explosive court papers

Live‑in partner and wife clash in Pretoria High Court over control of Mosioua Lekota’s affairs

One of the late former Cope president Mosioua Lekota’s son is allegedly a drug addict and a thief.

These allegations were made by Lekota’s live-in lover, Luzelle Adams (44), in papers she filed in the Pretoria High Court, where she was facing off with the politician’s wife, Cynthia Lekota (76).

Cynthia submitted papers in court in which she applied for the appointment of Advocate Du Preeze to manage Lekota’s affairs while he languished in hospital battling various illnesses, including prostate cancer.

In the papers, in which she cited Cynthia as the applicant and Lekota as the respondent, Luzelle said the  politician’s son, who is known to Africa Daily,  may have  taken the decision to enter the legal battle  under the influence of substance.

She said  Lekota’s son signed a confirmatory affidavit in support of the application made by  Cynthia. She questioned his capability to support Cynthia’s affidavit.

“The respondent’s biological adult son is an unemployed, permanent drug addict who supports his addiction from his late mother’s estate. He will do anything to support his drug addiction. I doubt that he was in a sober state when he deposed to that confirmatory affidavit,” she said.

She further said the last time the son saw Lekota was in May 2025, when the  former Free State ANC provincial chairperson was in hospital.

Luzelle said the son is also a pincher who stole items from his father’s house in Montecello, Midrand, even while he was in hospital.

“During previous visiting times, he would visit the respondent in Montecello only to steal the respondent’s items in the house,” she said.

Luzelle said if he allegedly pilfered from his father, she has no doubt that he would continue with this behaviour if his half-brother, Kotane Lekota, the son of Cynthia, is appointed as the former defence minister’s curator bonis.

“If he disrespected the respondent prior to this current ICU (intensive care unit) hospitalisation by stealing from him, then I have no doubt that he would continue with this conduct after Kotane is appointed curator bonis,” she said.

Adams also took a jibe at Kotane.

“Kotane Lekota is the first-born son of the respondent. Even though he resides in Sandton, and his dad in Midrand, Montecello, he never had time for his dad. Since 2017, he never visited his dad unless there was some emergency. The respondent and I visited Kotane a few times at his house in Sandton.

He never cared for his dad. Even after the respondent’s discharge from hospital in 2025, Kotane would not visit the respondent for more than twenty (20) minutes at a time. He knows nothing of significance about his dad’s well-being,” she said.

She said that despite Lekota’s wish, while he was still of sound mind, that she be his next of kin, Kotane and Cynthia would always attempt to change that at the hospital where he was admitted.

Luzelle said that in 2025, while Lekota was in hospital, she requested a meeting with Kotane because she wanted them to discuss practical arrangements for the former defence minister.

“I concede that everyone who visited the respondent at the hospital assumed that he might die, given his poor prognosis at the time. However, at this meeting, instead of discussing practical arrangements, Kotane requested from me a copy of the respondent’s final will and testament. I was shocked by this request. He also informed me that he intends to be the executor of the respondent’s estate,” she said.

She explained that Kotane also personally informed her at that meeting that he would make sure that any inheritance from Lekota would not go to his siblings because he regarded them as financially irresponsible.

After filing these papers, the court later appointed Kotane as an interim curator of Lekota’s estate. The also ruled that Luzelle had emptied Lekota’s bank account when he was incapacitated. Luzelle has filed papers to appeal the court judgement on May 8.Attempts to solicit comments from Lekota’s son and Kotane drew a blank
