South African investigative journalist and International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) Africa Coordinator Micah Reddy is on his way back to South Africa after being detained by authorities in Djibouti for three days.
Reddy was taken into custody at about 1pm on Saturday, September 19, together with his colleague and local fixer, Kooki Mahmoud.
In a statement released by Reddy’s family on Tuesday, they said he was unharmed and that Mahmoud had since been released without charge.
“It is with immense relief and delight that we share the news that he is on his way back to South Africa, unharmed,” the family said.
The family said they had been unable to establish Reddy’s whereabouts or condition despite repeated efforts involving his family, colleagues, media organisations, diplomatic representatives and press freedom groups.
“No official information was provided until today,” they said.
The family said Reddy was not in Djibouti to report on the country or its government when he was detained.
They described him as a respected investigative journalist who had spent his career advancing the public interest through rigorous and ethical reporting.
The family thanked the South African and UK governments, diplomatic missions and multilateral bodies for their efforts to establish Reddy’s whereabouts and secure information about his welfare.
They also thanked the ICIJ, civil society organisations, media organisations, journalists, friends, family and members of the public who supported efforts to secure his release.
The family singled out Reddy’s legal representatives for their work in securing his return home.
“Waiting for news of a loved one whose whereabouts and wellbeing are unknown is unimaginably painful,” the family said.
The family asked the media to respect their privacy following Reddy’s return until they are ready to provide further information.
“We are profoundly grateful that, for our family, this story has a safe and happy ending,” they said.
