The Competition Commission has recommended that the Competition Tribunal approves Teraco Properties’ proposed acquisition of vacant industrial land in Brackenfell, Cape Town, without conditions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 22 October 2026, Competition Commission spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga said the Commission found that the transaction was unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market.
The property, situated at Erf 25704 in Brackenfell, includes buildings, structures, fixtures and fittings associated with the site, as well as a substation and a new electricity supply.
According to the Commission, the land is zoned for general industrial use and has no buildings or other improvements, apart from the electricity substation infrastructure.
No business is currently conducted on the property.
Teraco Properties is directly controlled by Teraco Data Environments, which is ultimately controlled by Digital Realty Trust Inc. through its interest in Digital Realty Trust LP.
Digital Realty is a global technology provider specialising in data centre platforms, colocation and interconnection solutions for businesses across various industries.
These include cloud computing, information technology, communications, financial services, manufacturing, energy and healthcare.
Teraco Properties invests in property used to house and support Teraco’s data centre operations. Its relevant activities for the transaction include investments in industrial property and land in Cape Town.
The Commission found that the proposed acquisition would not raise significant public interest concerns.
It has recommended approval without conditions by the Competition Tribunal.
The recommendation follows the Commission’s assessment of the proposed transaction under the Competition Act.
The Tribunal’s final decision is still required for the recommended approval to be confirmed.
