Ramaphosa to lead virtual extraordinary SADC Heads of State Summit Wednesday

President Cyril Ramaphosa will open and chair a Virtual Extraordinary Summit of Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government on Wednesday, from Cape Town, the Presidency has announced.

The high-level meeting, convened outside the regular SADC calendar, will bring together regional leaders to deal with pressing and unfinished institutional business, including the appointment of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration and the election of the incoming Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

Ramaphosa, who is the current Chairperson of the SADC Summit, will deliver the opening address.

The Presidency said the opening ceremony will be livestreamed on its digital platforms.

In a statement on Tuesday night, Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed.

Ramaphosa will be accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola.

The meeting comes just two months after South Africa hosted the 46th Ordinary SADC Summit at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban from 3 to 18 August 2026, where regional integration, industrialisation and peace and security dominated the agenda.

Wednesday’s virtual session is a test of his leadership as SADC chair at a time when the 16-member bloc faces mounting internal and external pressures.

The appointment of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration is is a priority according to insiders.

The portfolio is central to SADC’s trade, infrastructure and economic integration agenda, including implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The post has been subject to intense lobbying among member states, with delays threatening continuity at the Secretariat in Gaborone.

Equally sensitive is the election of the next Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation – SADC’s primary body for conflict prevention, peacekeeping and political governance.

The Organ has been under scrutiny over its handling of protracted crises in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, northern Mozambique and political transitions in the region.

In accordance with SADC practice, invitations to Heads of State and Government have been issued by the Chairperson of the Summit – President Ramaphosa himself.

Analysts say Ramaphosa will be expected to use his opening address to push for institutional discipline and faster decision-making, as critics accuse SADC of being slow to act on security threats while bureaucratic appointments stall.

The Presidency is expected to issue a communique at the conclusion of the closed session on Wednesday.
