African football teams Egypt and Cape Verde continued to impress in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both teams kept their unbeaten streaks alive in the group stages.
Egypt Dominates Group G
Egypt put on an outstanding show on Monday morning. They beat New Zealand 3-1 in a one-sided match at BC Place in Vancouver. The Pharaohs now sit comfortably at the top of Group G with four points. They are very close to reaching the 32-team knockout round.
Mostafa Zico, Mohamed Salah, and Trézéguet each scored to seal the win for the eight-time African champions. Egypt will play Iran in their final group match on Saturday, 27 June. A win or a draw will guarantee their spot in the next round.
Cape Verde Fights Back
Cape Verde also boosted their chances of moving on. They fought hard to secure a 2-2 draw against Uruguay on Sunday night in Group H.
Playing in their first-ever World Cup, Cape Verde made history. Kelvin Pina scored the country’s first-world-cup goal in the 21st minute. Later, Hélio Varela capitalised on a mistake by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to score the second goal. Uruguay had briefly taken control with goals from Maximiliano Araújo and Agustín Canobbio. Cape Verde faces Saudi Arabia early on Saturday, 27 June. A win will send them to the next round.
Tunisia Sent Packing
It was bad news for Tunisia, who became the continent’s whipping boys. They were knocked out of the tournament after a 4-0 loss to Japan on Sunday night in Group F.
This was the second heavy defeat for Tunisia. They started their campaign with an embarrassing 5-1 loss to Sweden. Following that match, the team fired coach Sabri Lamouchi and replaced him with Hervé Renard.
