Suspended KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Major General Lesetja Senona has vehemently denied that he was involved in the theft of cocaine that was stored in Port Shepstone in KwaZulu-Natal.
Senona, who was testifying before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria on Friday, also denied claims made by his colleagues that the door to the safe was opened with a key and was thereafter cut with a grinder to make it look like it was a break-in or burglary.
“This was a pure crime scene. The person who cut this safe door is an expert,” he said.
Senona said claims that the break-in was staged were made to create an impression that he stole the drugs because he was in possession of the key to the safe.
“I did not steal these drugs. I deny that I stole the drugs,” he said.
Senona said only an imbecile would use a key to unlock the safe and steal the drugs, and then use a grinder to cut the door later.
“Why would after stealing the drugs risk to be arrested by using something as noisy a grinder to cut the door?,” he asked.
He further said that he agreed with the notion that the culprits who stole the drugs were working with certain corrupt police officers within the Hawks.
“It was an inside job. These people would not have known the layout of the building if this was not an inside job,” he said.
Senona said he was praying that those who stole the drugs could be arrested and brought to book.
He said the theft of the drugs was like a death that had robbed him of his son. He said he was hurting inside and would only get closure when the tsotsis had been arrested.
