Pirates, AmaZulu, and Sekhukhune kick off new campaigns with victories

Defending Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates began the defense of their league crown in perfect fashion after securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over league newcomers Midlands FC at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers produced a professional display in front of their home supporters, dominating possession and creating better scoring opportunities as they collected the maximum three points on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 campaign. The victory immediately sent a strong message to the rest of the league that Pirates are determined to retain the championship they won last season.

AmaZulu FC also enjoyed a winning start after edging Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont. Usuthu’s disciplined performance and solid defending ensured they walked away with all three points against one of last season’s consistent performers.

Sekhukhune United made home advantage count with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newly promoted Durban City at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane. Babina Noko needed just a single goal to separate the two sides as they opened their campaign on a positive note in front of their supporters.

Meanwhile, there was no separating Golden Arrows and Chippa United after the two teams battled to a goalless draw at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. Although both sides created chances, neither could find the breakthrough as they were forced to settle for a point each.

The opening round of fixtures will continue on Sunday, while the scheduled clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants has been postponed due to Sundowns’ participation in continental commitments
