Former uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) MP and popular musician Papa Penny has officially joined the Afrika Mayibuye Movement after parting ways with the MK Party, in a move expected to shake up Limpopo politics ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

The announcement was made by party leader Floyd Shivambu during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, where he formally welcomed the well-known entertainer and former parliamentarian into the organisation.

Shivambu said Papa Penny, whose real name is Eric Gezani Nkobane, would play a key role in growing the movement’s support base in Limpopo, particularly in Giyani and nearby communities.

“We’re pleased and truly honoured to announce that Eric Gezani Nkobane, affectionately known by millions of South Africans as Penny Penny or Papa Penny, has officially joined the Afrika Mayibuye Movement,” said Shivambu.

Papa Penny’s exit from the MK Party comes amid reports of internal divisions and tensions within the organisation.

Shivambu described the musician’s arrival as a significant boost for the movement as it gears up for the 2026 local government polls.

“Papa Penny will play an important role in leading and strengthening our campaign efforts in the Giyani Municipality and surrounding communities,” he said.

Before becoming a member of Parliament, Papa Penny , who is also known for his popular TV show “ Papa Penny Ahee” ( Greetings Papa Penny ) served as a councillor in Ward 5 under the Giyani Local Municipality, where he gained recognition as a grassroots leader involved in community development.

“We welcome him into the Afrika Mayibuye Movement and are confident that his experience, grassroots connection and commitment to community upliftment will contribute meaningfully towards building a strong people’s movement for total freedom and emancipation,” Shivambu said.

The Afrika Mayibuye Movement said it remains focused on expanding its support across the country through community outreach programmes, political education and local mobilisation campaigns.
