The corruption trial against former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has been postponed to 20 August 2026 for her defence team to prepare an application seeking her discharge.
According to Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) spokesperson Henry Mamothame, the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria postponed the matter on Thursday at the request of the defence.
Mamothame said Mapisa-Nqakula placed it on record that she would be filing an application in terms of Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
The application will be brought after the state closed its case, with the defence set to receive the transcribed court record before filing its heads of argument.
“The state has closed its case and it will await the heads of arguments from the accused in order to draft a reply,” Mamothame said.
Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering.
She is accused of soliciting R4.5 million, with R2.1 million allegedly received in cash from a service provider.
The matter returns to court on 20 August 2026.
