The family of late footballer Jayden Adams has announced that only relatives will be allowed to view his body before the funeral service and attend the burial at the cemetery on Saturday, citing safety and logistical concerns.
In an official family statement issued on the eve of the funeral, the Adams family said the decision followed a meeting with all relevant stakeholders due to the expected large turnout.
The meeting was attended by members of the family, the South African Police Service (SAPS), security officials, the venue owner, municipal law enforcement and traffic services.
“In the best interests of all attendees, and to ensure that we say goodbye to our beloved Jayden in a dignified manner, a collective decision was taken,” the family said.
The family said only relatives would be permitted to view Adams’ body before the funeral service, while only family members would be allowed to attend the burial service at the cemetery.
The family acknowledged that the decision may disappoint mourners but appealed for understanding.
“These decisions were not taken lightly, as we know you all wanted to share every moment with us, but we are sure you can understand and respect them given the expected number of attendees at the funeral,” the statement read.
Despite the restrictions at the cemetery, the family confirmed that the main funeral service, which starts at 10:30am, will be open to the public.
The family also dismissed reports circulating on social media that only mourners wearing special armbands would be allowed into the service.
“The service will start at 10:30 and can be attended by all, not just the family or those with a specific armband,” the statement said.
Mourners intending to attend have been urged to arrive early.
The family further announced that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will livestream the funeral to allow those unable to attend to pay their final respects.
The Adams family also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received since the footballer’s death.
“We, as the family, want to take this opportunity to once again thank you for the amazing support you have shown us thus far,” the statement said.
