Grammy Award-winning music producer Black Coffee has helped purchase and settle a R3.5 million home for his friend and his wife, who were struggling financially.

Black Coffee has also magnanimously bought two vehicles for the couple.

As if that was not enough, he also paid R2.8 million for their child’s aviation studies.

This was revealed by Black Coffee’s friend in court papers filed in the Johannesburg High Court, where he is opposing his wife’s application for spousal maintenance.

The wife is demanding spousal maintenance after filing for divorce against Black Coffee’s friend.

The former lovebirds’ names cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

In the court papers, which Africa Daily has seen, Black Coffee’s friend stated that he was unemployed and had no source of income, and therefore could not afford to pay the amount his estranged wife is demanding.

He stated that Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi “Nathi” Maphumulo, has been helping him and his estranged wife financially, including acquiring the multimillion-rand property in which she lives with their children.

“Nathi then benevolently undertook to assist my wife and I to try and lift ourselves financially and try to stabilise our lives, careers, and children’s education and general maintenance,” he said.

He said after he lost his house in northern Johannesburg, Black Coffee stepped in and assisted them in securing a roof over their heads with the help of Standard Bank.

“He then helped boost my wife’s credit score by donating money into her bank accounts to make them look like steady income for a period of about three consecutive months so that she could apply for a bond and get us a new house to live in. This is how it came to be that, in the midst of our financial distress, we were able to ‘purchase’ a house in the upmarket suburb of (name withheld),” he said.

He further stated that Black Coffee has paid every single bond repayment instalment and lump-sum repayment to Standard Bank for the matrimonial home.

Black Coffee’s friend said the internationally revered DJ paid these monies either into his business or personal account, whereupon he would forward the money to his wife’s bank account. His wife would then pay the funds into the bank’s bond account because the property was registered in her name and she was the bondholder.

“The repayments of the bond have been done so diligently that the house, which was bought on 13 May 2022 for R3 500 000.00 (Three Million Five Hundred Thousand Rand), was paid off in full by August 2025. The bond statements with respect to the matrimonial home are within the possession and control of the applicant, as she is the sole registered owner of the matrimonial home,” he said.

Black Coffee’s friend also revealed that the recording superstar purchased two luxury vehicles for them.

This was after he paid a total of R2.8 million for their child’s aviation studies at a well-known aviation school in South Africa.

This, he said, happened after Black Coffee discovered that they were using public transport to run errands because they did not own a car.

“Paid in full, in the amount of R2 800 000.00 (Two Million Eight Hundred Thousand Rand), the full fees for aviation studies for (name withheld). Cash purchase of a Volvo XC60 2014 motor vehicle for the applicant; cash purchase of a Porsche Cayenne 2016 motor vehicle for me.

“I must point out that all of the financial assistance outlined above was not pursuant to any formal work or consultancy agreement between Nathi and I. It is simply a manifestation of the abundance of compassion in his heart,” he stated in the papers.

The producer extraordinaire’s friend also said Black Coffee paid the medical bills of one of their children.

“Even though Nathi has been steadfast in his support of my family, he is under no obligation to continue doing so. There is no contract or any formal agreement regarding the support that we have received as a family.

“The applicant cannot apply for maintenance from my friend and use me as a proxy. I am advised that there is no sound legal basis for such a claim,” he said.
