Athletics South Africa (ASA) has removed James Moloi as president with immediate effect.
The board also removed him from the ASA board, according to a letter to all council members dated 20 October 2026. Africa Daily has seen the letter.
It comes five days after World Athletics ordered ASA to act on Moloi without delay.
The letter is signed by acting CEO Terrence Magogodela. He says the board mandated him to write it.
The board took note of the report of the disciplinary panel that found Moloi guilty of some of the charges relating to the abuse of the ASA credit card issued to him.
It also took note of the panel’s recommendation that he be removed from the board and stripped of his title as president.
“The Board also took into consideration the directive from World Athletics that mandated the Board to give effect, without delay, to the sanctions recommended by the disciplinary panel.
“The board has consequently resolved to give effect to the findings and recommended sanctions and hereby notifies all members of its decision to remove Mr James Moloi as President of ASA and as a member of the ASA Board with immediate effect,” the letter reads.
The letter also confirms that World Athletics and the Southern African Confederation of Athletics (SACA) have appointed SACA president Zakhele Dlamini as an independent observer of ASA’s constitutional reforms.
Moloi had been suspended since late 2025, after a SASCOC-commissioned forensic report into his use of the card.
On 6 October 2026, a panel chaired by retired Judge Basheer Waglay found him guilty of two charges relating to the misuse of ASA funds.
On 15 October, World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon wrote to ASA. He said World Athletics expected ASA to implement the panel’s decision “without delay”.
The same letter gave ASA six months to adopt a new constitution or face possible sanctions, including provisional suspension of its membership.
The man who signed Moloi’s removal letter, Magogodela played a role in the card saga himself.
The panel heard that when Moloi’s card was declined, Magogodela would contact Finance Committee chairperson Jakes Jacobs, and together they would authorise more money.
No action against Magogodela has been made public. He has been acting CEO since December 2020.
