Accused dies as R21m insurance fraud case returns to court

One of the accused in a Limpopo case involving alleged fraudulent insurance claims totalling about R21 million has died.

Limpopo NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi confirmed on Monday that William Shokane was among the accused in the matter before the Polokwane High Court.

Shokane was one of 10 accused facing 111 charges, including murder, fraud, money laundering, receiving proceeds of unlawful activities and defeating the ends of justice.

The State alleges that the accused targeted vulnerable victims between 2013 and 2024 by fraudulently taking out life, funeral and accidental insurance policies in their names.

According to the State, the accused would later submit claims in an attempt to obtain insurance payouts amounting to approximately R21 million, including claims that were repudiated.

The matter was before the court on Monday, with proceedings postponed to 29 October 2026.

The next court appearance will deal with the remaining accused and the securing of legal representation through Legal Aid South Africa (Judicare).
