South Africa will bid an emotional farewell to one of its brightest football talents when Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams is laid to rest on Saturday, 25 July 2026, in his hometown of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.
The funeral service will be held at the Coetzenburg Centre (formerly known as the DF Malan Centre), where members of the public will be afforded an opportunity to pay their final respects by viewing his remains from 9:30am, before the official funeral service begins at 10:30am.
Born on 5 May 2001, Adams died on 11 July 2026 at the age of 25, only days after returning from representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His passing came less than a month after the death of his beloved grandmother, whose loss deeply affected him during the tournament.
Adams leaves behind his father, Juanito Adams, other close family members, his longtime partner Aqueelah Adendorf, and their five-year-old daughter, Allaia-Jayda.
His father said the family was devastated and still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, urging the public to allow them space to grieve while awaiting the outcome of official investigations. The family also appealed for an end to speculation surrounding the cause of his death and asked that his memory be honoured with dignity and respect.
Adams’ football journey began in Stellenbosch, where he rose through the youth ranks before establishing himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s finest midfielders. He made more than 100 appearances for Stellenbosch FC and helped the club lift the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup, earning recognition as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents. In January 2025, he secured a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he quickly became a key member of the squad and helped the Brazilians win the 2025/26 CAF Champions League title.
On the international stage, Adams made his senior Bafana Bafana debut in 2022 and went on to earn 13 caps while scoring two goals during the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he featured prominently in South Africa’s historic run to the knockout stages, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic before appearing as a substitute in the crucial victory over South Korea that secured the country’s first-ever place in the World Cup knockout phase.

Mamelodi Sundowns described Adams as not only an outstanding footballer but also a humble, hardworking and respected teammate whose infectious smile and commitment inspired everyone at the club.
The South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU) remembered him as “a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”
Bafana Bafana teammates, former teammates at Stellenbosch FC and Sundowns players shared heartfelt messages on social media, remembering Adams as a selfless teammate who always put the team first and remained grounded despite his rapid rise to the top of South African football.
South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan visited the Adams family in Stellenbosch to offer condolences, while FIFA President Gianni Infantino also sent a message of sympathy, saying the thoughts of the global football family were with Adams’ loved ones during this difficult time.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described Adams as one of South Africa’s brightest football stars, saying the nation had lost a gifted player whose future promised even greater achievements.
“Our nation mourns alongside his family, teammates and millions of supporters who watched him grow into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said.
As family, friends, teammates and supporters gather in Stellenbosch on Saturday, they will celebrate the life of a footballer whose talent, humility and dedication inspired a generation. Although his career was tragically cut short, Jayden Adams leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered in South African football.
