The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in self-isolation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry spokesperson Kaamil Alli confirmed that Tau had contracted the virus but said he remains in good spirits while recovering.
“Minister Tau is in good spirits and is currently in self-isolation,” the statement said.
The ministry did not disclose when the minister tested positive or whether his official programme would be affected.
Alli said Tau has urged anyone who may have recently come into contact with him to take the necessary precautions and consider getting tested.
“Minister Tau would like to encourage those who have been in contact with him recently to get tested and exercise precautionary measures,” the statement added.
The announcement comes as health authorities continue to encourage South Africans to remain vigilant against respiratory illnesses and to follow recommended health protocols when experiencing symptoms.
Speaking to Africa Daily, Alli confirmed that Tau has contracted the dreaded virus .
“Unfortunately there is no indication where the minister ,Dr have contraxcgted it,” Alli said.
