The estranged wife of a close friend of internationally acclaimed DJ and music producer Black Coffeehas accused both her husband and the Grammy Award-winning artist of perjuring themselves by lying to the court about the extent of the financial support the recording superstar provided to her family.
Africa Daily previously reported that Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi “Nathi” Maphumulo, allegedly helped his friend and the friend’s wife by purchasing and settling a R3.5 million home while the couple was in a financial quagmire.
It is also alleged that the internationally renowned artist bought two luxury vehicles for the couple and paid R2.8 million towards their child’s aviation studies.
The allegations regarding Black Coffee’s financial assistance were made by the estranged husband in an affidavit filed in the Johannesburg High Court, where he opposed his wife’s application for R65 000 in spousal maintenance and R22 000 in papgeld for their two children.
In his opposing affidavit, the husband claimed he was unemployed and depended largely on Black Coffee’s generosity for the survival of himself and his family. He argued that he could not afford the maintenance quantum’s being sought by his estranged wife.
However, in heads of argument recently filed before court, the estranged wife dismissed those claims as false, alleging that both her husband and Black Coffee were misleading the court. She argued that her husband works for the musician while also earning an income as a successful DJ.
“Extensive claims of Nkosinathi Maphumulo (“Nathi”) financial contributions towards, debts, credit scores, bond repayments, school fees, medical bills and vehicles. We submit that, these are irrelevant to the respondent’s statutory duty as envisaged in section 7(2) of the Divorce Act, and also vexatious as they unnecessarily implicate a non-party to the proceedings and harass the applicant, and prejudicial by falsely postulating that the marital lifestyle of the applicant was unsustainable without external aid, undermining her entitlement.
The respondent and Nathi are clearly perjuring themselves in these proceedings and the honourable court is requested to frown upon these conducts,” read the heads of argument.
The estranged wife further claimed she has irrefutable evidence that her husband is generating substantial income through his business interests and entertainment career.
According to court papers, the husband’s companies allegedly generated a combined revenue of about R2 million between May and September 2025.
“Bank statements of the aforesaid and proof of monthly
payments reflect substantial income and past monthly transfers earning in excess of R300 000.00. per month are herewith attached,” she stated.
The wife also alleged that on January 8, 2026, one of the husband’s companies received an inward payment of $5 050 (about R82 870) linked to an invoice from an unnamed company.
“The respondent is in addition, employed by Black Coffee, (a well-known International DJ as his tour manager and his right-hand man, where he
receives fluctuating amounts, however, for the current deal which I had sight of, he was offered $3000.00 (R49,230.00) which is currently being negotiated to $4 000.00 (R65,640.00) for a 3 day run per week it would seem,” she said.
The estranged wife also questioned the credibility of Black Coffee’s confirmatory affidavit, claiming it supported allegations that were untrue.
“The respondent’s answering affidavit is made up of allegations which are intended to inhibit the true facts of the issues at hand. And the confirmatory affidavit of Nathi as well, does not provide any truthfulness. Which then turn to their credibility as witnesses or deponents. Allegations contained therein are misleading and the applicant is in possession of the documentary evidence to the contrary,” she stated.
She further claimed to have proof that a working relationship between her husband and Black Coffee.
“It is clear that the respondent and Nathi merely colluded with each other either to mislead this honourable court or conceal the true facts and affairs of the respondent as is clear that Nathi merely deposed to the affidavit without having paid any attention to the allegation set out in the respondent’s answering affidavit,” she said.
Black Coffee couldn’t be reached for comment at the time for publishing.
