Former Build One South Africa (BOSA) Gauteng MPL Ayanda Allie, BOSA, Build One South Africa, Mmusi Maimane, Gauteng Legislature, Gauteng MPL, South African politics, Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster, Party levies, Constituency funding has broken her silence following her expulsion from the party, alleging that a dispute over party levies and constituency funding ultimately led to her removal.
In a statement on Monday, Allie confirmed she she was pink slipped and said she had served the people of Gauteng with “commitment, integrity, and a great sense of responsibility” during her two years as a Member of the Provincial Legislature.
According to Allie, tensions with the party leadership began after she refused to sign a Code of Conduct requiring public representatives to donate an entire month’s salary to the party annually, in addition to contributing 10% of their gross salary every month.
She said the policy was later amended to remove the annual one-month salary contribution and reduce the monthly levy to 10% of her net salary, which she accepted and signed.
However, Allie claimed a further dispute arose when she was informed that legislative funds intended for travel and constituency work would not be made available to enable her to fulfil her constitutional duties.
“As a result, I withheld the party levy from BOSA and instead used the resources to support the legislative and party political community initiatives for which I took an oath,” she said.
She said that during mediation, she was advised that she could begin requesting funding from the party for constituency activities, prompting her to agree to resume paying the monthly levy.
Allie said BOSA later demanded that she back-pay two years’ worth of outstanding levies, while she requested reimbursement for expenses she had personally covered over the same period.
According to her, both parties agreed that the amounts would be calculated and offset against one another, with no deadline set for the process.
She said further disagreements later emerged over mayoral candidacies, culminating in a disciplinary hearing.
Allie said she admitted during the hearing that she had withheld the party levy and explained her reasons. She claimed the independent chairperson found that her conduct did not justify dismissal, but the BOSA board overruled that recommendation and decided to expel her.
Rather than appeal the decision, Allie said she accepted that the party’s founders no longer wanted her to remain in BOSA and agreed that the relationship had irretrievably broken down.
Despite her departure, Allie thanked BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane, Deputy Leader Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster, party members and supporters for the opportunity to serve.
She said she remained committed to contributing to South Africa’s progress and wished the party well.
