Suspended Gauteng Chief Provincial Inspector Samuel Mashaba has unleashed lawyers on  his bosses, warning them he did not do anything wrong.

denied any wrongdoing and says he will cooperate with any lawful investigation into allegations against him.

In a letter dated 17 June 2026 and addressed to Gauteng Department of Community Safety Head of Department Tshepiso Mufamadi, Mashaba’s attorneys, Royce Steyl White (RSW) Inc., said their client deny any wrongdoing and said he will cooperate with any lawful investigation into allegations against him.

The lawyers rejected any suggestion that their client had engaged in misconduct, corruption or conduct that had brought the department into disrepute.

The letter, authored by RSW director Wikus Steyl, comes days after Mashaba was served with a notice of precautionary suspension  for misconduct on 13 June .

This after he admitted during his testimony before the Madlanga Commission to have accepted a money from police informant Itumeleng Nku, who he described as a friend.

“Our client unequivocally denies any allegation of misconduct, impropriety, dishonesty, corruption, or conduct that could reasonably be construed as bringing the department into disrepute,” Steyl wrote.

In the letter, which Africa Daily has seen, the lawyers also said Mashaba had throughout his public service career performed his duties diligently, professionally and in accordance with the law, adding that he had always sought to discharge his responsibilities with integrity and in the best interests of both the department and the public.

The letter also addresses Mashaba’s testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Alleged Criminality, Police Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System.

According to his legal team, the fact that Mashaba testified before the commission should not be interpreted as an admission of misconduct.

“To the extent that the department seeks to rely upon portions of our client’s testimony as a basis for allegations against him, such allegations are denied and will be addressed fully should any formal process be instituted,” the letter reads.

Mashaba’s lawyers said their client welcomed any lawful, fair and impartial investigation and would cooperate fully to establish the facts and clear his name.

However, they stressed that such cooperation should not be construed as an acceptance of any allegations or adverse inferences against him.

The attorneys further noted that Mashaba reserved all his rights arising from the precautionary suspension and any future disciplinary, administrative or employment-related proceedings that may be pursued by the department.

RSW also instructed that all future correspondence, requests for information and notices relating to the matter be directed exclusively to Steyl.

The law firm said it trusted that the Gauteng Department of Community Safety would conduct itself in accordance with the principles of procedural fairness, legality and good administration in any further steps it may contemplate.

This is a developing story.
