The long-awaited MTN8 finally gets underway on Saturday, August 8, with the opening quarter-final clashes promising to set the tone for what is expected to be another fiercely contested cup competition.
While defending champions Orlando Pirates begin their title defence against Durban City at Orlando Stadium, all eyes in Limpopo and Pretoria will later turn to Loftus Versfeld, where Mamelodi Sundowns welcome Polokwane City at 6pm.
For Sundowns, the match carries more significance than simply being the opening fixture of their MTN8 campaign.
The Brazilians have dominated South African football for years, but the MTN8 trophy has continued to elude them. They will therefore see Saturday’s encounter as another opportunity to end their long wait for the prestigious top-eight cup.
Sundowns will also be making their first competitive appearance of the new season after their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants was postponed at their request because of exceptional circumstances. The PSL confirmed the postponement as part of the opening-weekend changes.
The Brazilians enter the competition with renewed confidence after a historic 2025/26 campaign in which they won the CAF Champions League.
The continental triumph has brought a second star to the club’s new 2026/27 kit, marking their second CAF Champions League title since 2016.
But despite their continental success, the MTN8 remains unfinished business.
Standing in their way is a Polokwane City side that secured its place among the country’s top eight after finishing seventh in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership with 40 points.
History favours Sundowns
The head-to-head record between the two sides gives Sundowns a clear psychological advantage.
According to available historical records, Sundowns have won 12 of the 20 recorded meetings, while Polokwane City have won four, with four matches ending in draws.
The most recent meetings have been particularly difficult for Rise and Shine.
Sundowns won both league encounters between the teams during the 2025/26 campaign. They recorded a 1-0 victory at Seshego Stadium on April 29, before completing the double with a convincing 3-0 win at Loftus Versfeld on May 3.
The previous MTN8 meeting between the clubs also went Sundowns’ way.
In the 2024 quarter-final, Sundowns edged Polokwane City 1-0 after extra time, with Thabang Matuludi turning the ball into his own net in the 102nd minute. The victory sent the Brazilians into the semi-finals.
Polokwane City will therefore have more than just progression on their minds when they walk onto the Loftus pitch.
They will be looking to upset a side that has enjoyed the upper hand in recent encounters and, at the same time, prove that they have developed enough to compete with the country’s most decorated clubs.
Pirates begin defence
Earlier in the afternoon, defending champions Orlando Pirates will begin their MTN8 title defence against Durban City at Orlando Stadium.
The Buccaneers enter the competition with considerable confidence after opening their 2026/27 league campaign with a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Milford FC at the same venue.
Pirates have established themselves as the dominant force in the MTN8 in recent years, winning the competition four consecutive times from 2022 to 2025.
That remarkable run has made them the first club in the Premier Soccer League era to win the competition four times in succession.
Durban City, however, should not be underestimated.
The Citizens finished eighth in the 2025/26 league campaign and secured their place in the MTN8 after a season in which they also held Pirates to a 0-0 draw at Orlando Stadium in May.
The head-to-head record between Pirates and Durban City is far more limited than the Sundowns-Polokwane rivalry, but their most recent league meeting ended without a winner.
A cup of unfinished business
For Sundowns, the MTN8 represents a chance to add another domestic trophy to a cabinet that already contains league titles and continental silverware.
For Polokwane City, it is an opportunity to create one of the competition’s biggest upsets.
The pressure will be firmly on the Brazilians, who are expected to control proceedings at Loftus Versfeld.
But cup football often ignores reputation and history.
Polokwane City have nothing to lose and everything to gain, while Sundowns know that another early exit would raise questions about their ability to turn their dominance in other competitions into MTN8 success.
With the new season beginning under the shadow of high expectations, Saturday’s encounter could provide an early indication of whether Sundowns are finally ready to end their long wait for the MTN8 crown.
