Police have offered a reward of up to R400 000 for information that could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of those responsible for the deaths of eight women in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.
National Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili Dimpane and Police Minister Firoz Cachalia announced the reward during a media briefing in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.
The two officials also confirmed Africa Daily’s report that the number of women whose bodies have been discovered in Ekurhuleni has risen to eight.
The women are believed to have been brutally killed, with police investigating whether the cases could be linked.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga, Social Development Minister Dina Pule and Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo have condemned the killings and the continued scourge of gender-based violence and femicide in the province.
The leaders said government would intensify efforts to combat gender-based violence by deploying additional resources and strengthening interventions aimed at protecting women.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously described gender-based violence and femicide as a national crisis requiring urgent and coordinated action
