Former Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe dies

Corporate affairs specialist and former Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe has died.
His family has confirmed his death.

Phasiwe died on Sunday after a distinguished career that took him from journalism into strategic communications and senior roles at several major South African institutions.

The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been confirmed.

Unverified reports suggest that Phasiwe suffered a seizure at his home before being taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

He became a well-known figure during South Africa’s electricity crisis after taking on the role of Eskom spokesperson.

His visibility increased as the power utility came under mounting public pressure over concerns surrounding the stability of the national electricity grid.

Phasiwe went on to become one of Eskom’s most recognisable public representatives during a period of intense scrutiny.

However, his professional career stretched far beyond his time at the power utility.

He previously served in communications roles at the Office of the Public Protector, a leading commercial bank and the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory.

At the time of his death, Phasiwe was the Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications at Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS).

He began his career in the media as a financial journalist before making the transition into strategic communications.

Throughout his career, Phasiwe earned the respect of colleagues in the communications industry for his professionalism and ability to handle complex and high-pressure issues.
