Algeria carry Africa’s hopes against Switzerland in FIFA World Cup Round of 32

Algeria will carry the hopes of an entire continent when they take on Switzerland in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Friday morning. Kickoff is at 5am (South African time).

With South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal all eliminated from the tournament, the Desert Foxes are now one of the last African teams left with an opportunity to keep the continent’s dream alive. Coach Vladimir Petković’s side knows victory over the Swiss would not only secure a place in the Round of 16 but also restore African pride after a series of heartbreaking exits in the knockout stage.

Algeria’s journey to the knockout rounds has been one of resilience and determination. Drawn into a difficult Group J alongside defending champions Argentina, Austria and Jordan, the North Africans recovered superbly after a disappointing start.

Their campaign began with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Argentina, leaving many questioning their chances of progression. However, Algeria responded with a vital 2-1 victory over Jordan before producing an entertaining 3-3 draw against Austria in their final group match. The four points they collected were enough to see them qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Switzerland, meanwhile, enter the encounter full of confidence after topping Group B with seven points. The Swiss opened with a 1-1 draw against Qatar before recording convincing victories over Bosnia and Herzegovina (4-1) and co-hosts Canada (2-1), finishing the group stage unbeaten.

Algeria will once again look to captain Riyad Mahrez to inspire them on the biggest stage. The experienced winger remains the team’s creative heartbeat, capable of producing moments of brilliance with his dribbling, vision and finishing. Midfielder Ibrahim Maza has also impressed with his composure and creativity, while striker Amine Gouiri will be expected to provide the cutting edge in attack.

For Switzerland, exciting young forward Johan Manzambi has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the tournament after scoring three goals and providing an assist during the group stage. Experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka will control the tempo in midfield, while striker Breel Embolo remains a constant threat in the final third.

The match also carries added intrigue as Algeria coach Vladimir Petković faces Switzerland, the country he managed for seven years before taking charge of the Desert Foxes. Petković has insisted that sentiment will play no part, saying his full focus is on helping Algeria continue their remarkable World Cup journey.

With Africa’s hopes now resting on their shoulders, Algeria will be aiming to defy the odds once again and become the continent’s latest success story at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A victory over the Swiss would not only extend their own dream but also ensure that the African flag continues to fly proudly in football’s biggest tournament.
