A police officer attached to Murder and Robbery Unit in Gauteng has been arrested for allegedly pointing a firearm at his brother during a dispute over property left by their late parents.
This was said by Limpopo Police Spokesperson Captain Malesela Ledwaba in police statment on Wednesday.
Ledwaba said the 53-year-old officer, Evans Mongwe, appeared before the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, on a charge of pointing a firearm.
Police clarified that he had initially been incorrectly reported as being attached to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).
Ledwaba said the charge stems from an incident that allegedly took place at Mafarana Village in the Letsitele policing area of Limpopo’s Mopani District on 19 July 2026.
According to Ledwaba, Mongwe allegedly pointed his service firearm at his 48-year-old brother during an argument over their late parents’ property.
A case of pointing a firearm was subsequently opened, prompting a police investigation.
He was arrested on Sunday, 26 July 2026, after returning home. His service firearm and ammunition were confiscated as part of the investigation.
Ledwaba said the matter is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
The Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court granted Mongwe bail of R2,500, and the case was postponed to 26 August 2026 for further court proceedings.
