A dark cloud has befallen Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President and Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema following the death of his grandfather and fellow EFF member, Ishe Rufus “Popies” Malema.
The passing of Malema’s grandfather was announced by the (EFF) in a statment on Tuesday.
In the statement, the red beret brigade described the late Popies Malema as a devoted family patriarch, a pillar of strength and a lifelong supporter of the party’s struggle for economic freedom.
The Red Sea it stood in solidarity with Malema and his family during what it described as a time of profound grief.
“Their grief is shared by the entire EFF family,” the party said.
The EFF also described the late Popies Malema as the cornerstone of the Malema family, saying he provided wisdom, guidance and unwavering support to his grandson throughout his political journey.
According to the party, after the death of Malema’s grandmother in 2019, he took on an even greater role within the family, becoming both a grandfather and grandmother figure while offering constant encouragement and support.
The party said he became a familiar face at Malema’s court appearances, standing firmly beside his grandson, driven by his unwavering belief in the EFF leader’s integrity and leadership.
The EFF also praised his commitment to the party’s ideals, saying he remained a champion of economic freedom even in his later years.
“He actively embodied the EFF’s mission, showing that the fight for land, dignity and economic justice is one worth pursuing until the end,” the statement read.
The party thanked Malema for sharing his grandfather with the movement, saying his wisdom, prayers and steadfast commitment had strengthened the organisation.
“As we mourn, we also celebrate a life dedicated to family, principles and the liberation of our people. His spirit will remain an integral part of the EFF,” the party said.
The EFF extended its condolences to the Malema family, their extended relatives and everyone whose lives were touched by the late Ishe Rufus “Popies” Malema.
