Fear grips foreign nationals as anti-Illegal immigration march reaches Mathibela village

MATHIBELA, ZEBEDIELA – A handful of residents took to the streets of Mathibela Village in Zebediela on Tuesday, calling for action against undocumented foreign nationals believed to be living and operating businesses in the area.

The march, which was conducted under police supervision, saw demonstrators visit several spaza shops, liquor outlets, and restaurants owned by foreign nationals, demanding that operators produce valid documentation and business permits

However, the marchers were left disappointed after discovering that most of the targeted businesses had already closed their doors before their arrival.

The protest also had a noticeable impact on the daily activities of foreign nationals in the village. Tuesday was far from business as usual, with many choosing to stay away from their regular workplaces amid fears of confrontation.

Zimbabwean nationals, who are commonly seen at local construction sites, were largely absent throughout the day. Likewise, Basotho nationals, who usually offer their services in the surrounding bushveld, were nowhere to be seen, while Mozambican mechanics who normally work at vehicle repair workshops also kept a low profile.

Residents who participated in the march said their intention was to raise concerns about undocumented immigrants and ensure that everyone living and conducting business in the area complies with South African laws.

Police maintained a visible presence throughout the march to ensure that the demonstration remained peaceful and that no incidents of violence or damage to property occurred.

The protest forms part of growing community action in several parts of the country, where residents have expressed concerns over illegal immigration, undocumented businesses, and the enforcement of immigration and municipal regulations.

No arrests or major incidents were reported during Tuesday’s march.
