SABC Pulls Plug on Pimville Amid Contractual Disputes and Governance Concerns

SABC axes Pimville amid contract disputes with Bakwena Productions and governance concerns

The no nonsense South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has officially cancelled the popular telenovela Pimville with immediate effect following contractual disputes and governance concerns involving production company Bakwena Productions.

Bakwena Productions is co owned by television actor Kagiso Modupe and film producer and Rashaka Moufhe.

In a statement released on Monday evening, 25 May 2026, the broadcaster confirmed that the show would no longer air from Monday evening.

“The South African Broadcasting Corporation regrets to announce that Pimville will be discontinued from tonight, due to unresolved contractual obligations and breaches identified and communicated formally to Bakwena Productions,” the SABC said.

The broadcaster added that the decision was taken after “a thorough review process and careful consideration”, describing the outcome as “deeply regrettable” given the hard work of the cast and crew, as well as the support of viewers and stakeholders.

The decision follows the entity’s alleged failure to pay the cast and crew blaming the SABC for its liquidity crisis.

Pimville premiered on SABC 2 in 2025 and quickly established itself as one of the channel’s flagship township dramas.

Set in the historic Soweto township of Pimville, the telenovela focused on family tensions, betrayal, power struggles and love in a modern township setting.

The production was praised for showcasing authentic kasi life and creating opportunities for emerging actors and creatives in the television industry.

However, the production later became embroiled in controversy after concerns  emerged behind the scenes regarding governance and production oversight.

According to the SABC, enhanced monitoring and risk mitigation measures were introduced after issues were identified during the production process.

“As previously communicated publicly by the corporation, it was subsequently identified that certain approved oversight mechanisms were not implemented consistently and to the required standard,” the broadcaster said.

The SABC also confirmed that a legal process is under way against Bakwena Productions, including the issuing of a notice of breach in April 2026.

The broadcaster said it had engaged with cast and crew representatives regarding concerns raised and remains committed to protecting affected stakeholders while exploring operational solutions concerning the future of the production.

Meanwhile, repeat episodes of Amalanga Awafani Season 2 will temporarily fill the 21:00 timeslot previously occupied by Pimville on SABC 2.
