Morocco cruise into World Cup quarter-finals after punishing wasteful Canada

Morocco kept Africa’s hopes alive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after producing a clinical second-half performance to defeat Canada 3-0 in their Round of 16 clash on Saturday night and book a place in the quarter-finals.

The Atlas Lions capitalised on Canada’s wastefulness in front of goal, turning a contest that had been evenly balanced in the opening half into a comfortable victory after the break.
Azzedine Ounahi scored a brace, first in the 50th minute before rattling the net with his second goal in the 82nd minute before Soufiane Rahimi could put the matter beyond doubt with the third goal at the stoppage-time.

Canada will be left wondering what might have been after creating several promising opportunities during an impressive first-half display. Jesse Marsch’s men controlled large spells of possession and repeatedly tested the Moroccan defence but lacked the finishing touch when it mattered most.

The North Americans enjoyed the brighter start, with Jonathan David firing over the crossbar from a promising position early in the match before Tani Oluwaseyi was denied by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Tajon Buchanan also threatened from the right flank, but Canada’s final ball and finishing deserted them as Morocco survived the early pressure.

Morocco gradually settled into the contest and began to assert themselves through the creativity of Azzedine Ounahi and the pace of Ismael Saibari, who caused constant problems for the Canadian backline.
After frustrating their opponents for much of the opening period, Morocco emerged from the halftime break with renewed purpose and quickly took control of the match. Their greater composure in the final third proved decisive as they punished every lapse in Canada’s defence.

The African champions showed exactly why they remain one of the tournament favourites, combining defensive discipline with ruthless finishing to score three unanswered goals and end Canada’s historic World Cup run.

Despite Canada’s spirited performance, the difference between the two sides was efficiency in front of goal. While the Canadians failed to convert their chances, Morocco made the most of theirs to seal an emphatic victory.

The win sends Morocco into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between France and Paraguay as they continue their quest to become the first African nation to lift the FIFA World Cup.

For Canada, the defeat brings an end to a memorable campaign in which they reached the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Although their World Cup dream is over, they leave the tournament with plenty of positives after competing admirably against one of Africa’s strongest teams.

Morocco, meanwhile, together with Egypt remain Africa’s hope in the competition and will head into the quarter-finals full of confidence after another commanding display on football’s biggest stage.
