Northwest businessman and alleged police spy Oupa Brown Mogotsi was allegedly planning to escape from custody, prompting correctional services to alert the investigating officer and leading to the postponement of his bail application on new facts.
The 45-year-old’s bail application was postponed by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court to 1 September 2026 to allow Correctional Services to provide the court with a detailed report on the alleged escape plan.
According to NPA Gauteng communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole, a Correctional Services official alerted the investigating officer that Mogotsi was allegedly planning to escape.
“Arrangements were subsequently made to prevent the accused from escaping,” Mohlatlole said.
During proceedings, the prosecutor read the investigating officer’s affidavit into the record.
Mogotsi is accused of reporting to police on 3 November 2025 that, while driving alone in Vosloorus, he was pursued by occupants of a bakkie who allegedly fired multiple shots at his vehicle.
He allegedly stopped and fled on foot.
Mogotsi faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, and perjury.
Mohlatlole said the NPA would continue to place relevant information before the court and ensure that the matter proceeds in accordance with the law.
Mogotsi remains in custody pending the continuation of his bail application.
