Mamelodi Sundowns Player Cheats Death After Dramatic Hillbrow Shooting

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Devine Lunga cheated death on Sunday after his vehicle came under a hail of bullets in Hillbrow .
This happened while he was trying to help a man who claimed he had just been robbed of R34,000 by armed criminals.

The Zimbabwean international escaped unharmed despite a bullet striking his BMW in what police are investigating as an attempted murder.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder following the shooting, which occurred at about 2pm on Tudhope Street.

According to a truncated police statement, which Africa Daily has seen, Lunga was driving a blue BMW with friends when they were approached by an unknown man, who allegedly mistook them for undercover traffic officers.

“It is alleged that at around 14:00 on Sunday, 06 July 2026, Mr Lunga was driving a blue BMW along Tudhope Street in the company of friends when they were stopped by an unknown African male. The African male reportedly believed or thought that Mr Lunga and his companions were undercover traffic officials and informed them that the occupants of a vehicle that was ahead of them had allegedly robbed him of R34,000.00,” reads the statement.

The man allegedly pleaded with Lunga and the occupants to help him recover his funds.

Believing they were helping a victim of crime, Lunga and his companions allegedly followed the suspected vehicle.

During the pursuit, one of the occupants of the vehicle allegedly opened fire on Lunga’s BMW. One of the bullets struck the the footie’s vehicle, leaving a bullet hole.

Fortunately, neither Lunga nor any of the other occupants of the BMW was injured.

After the incident , Lunga drove to Hillbrow Police Station where opened a case of attempted murder.

No arrests have been made, and police investigations are continuing.
