The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has reserved final judgment in the trial of 23-year-old Bafana Mahungela, who is accused of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder and attempted rape in connection with the death of Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts.
The charges stem from an incident in Sandton on 29 October 2023. Mahungela has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Both the State and defence have closed their cases after presenting their evidence and legal arguments.
The court partially delivered its judgment on Thursday and postponed the matter to 11 September 2026 for the final judgment to be handed down.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it respected the court’s decision and remained confident in the evidence presented during the trial.
The NPA said it also acknowledged the significant public interest in the case and remained committed to ensuring that the legal process was conducted fairly and in accordance with the rule of law.
NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the prosecution would continue to uphold the interests of justice in the pursuit of accountability.
