LAM chairman pays emotional tribute to slain comedian Skeem Mafenya

The Limpopo Artists Movement (LAM) is mourning the brutal killing of 20-year-old comedian and content creator Skeem Mafenya, with its chairman, Mphoza Mashabela, describing his death as a devastating loss to the province’s creative industry.

Limpopo police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the murder. The suspects were arrested in the Malamulele district following the fatal stabbing of the popular content creator in the early hours of Saturday.

Mafenya, whose real name is Ndivhuwo Khadzianii, was allegedly stabbed by a group of men near a tavern at Madonsi-Shitasini village, near Malamulele. He sustained multiple stab wounds and was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services.

Police have yet to establish the motive for the killing.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, condemned the murder and assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Mashabela said Mafenya’s death had robbed Limpopo of a talented young entertainer whose humour and storytelling resonated with audiences across villages and townships.

“We are shattered. Skeem was not just a content creator, he was a son of Limpopo soil. He made us laugh when times were hard, he gave us hope when we had nothing to smile about. To hear that his life was ended so violently, with a knife, is a pain that cuts through all of us,” Mashabela said.

He said Mafenya represented a new generation of artists who used their phones, creativity and personal experiences to build a following and entertain their communities without relying on major television platforms or entertainment centres.

“Skeem proved that you don’t need to be in Johannesburg to be great. He proved that Limpopo stories matter. He spoke our language, he lived our reality, and he turned our everyday struggles into laughter. That is a gift that cannot be replaced,” Mashabela said.

The LAM chairman said he intended to engage with Mafenya’s family and fellow artists to offer comfort and support during the difficult period.

He extended his condolences to the young entertainer’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends and followers who had supported his work.

Mashabela also condemned the violence that continues to claim young lives, saying Mafenya had much more to contribute to the entertainment industry.

“How many more young lives must we lose to the knife? How many more dreams must be buried before we say enough is enough? Skeem had so much more to give,” he said.

Mashabela said LAM would engage with the family regarding funeral preparations and possible ways to honour Mafenya’s legacy.

“He may be gone, but his laughter will live forever in our phones, in our homes, in our hearts. Rest well, Skeem. Limpopo will never forget you,” he said.
