Fresh from a winning start to their 2026/27 Betway Premiership title defence, Orlando Pirates will now turn their attention to the first piece of silverware of the new campaign when they host Durban City in the MTN8 quarter-finals at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
Pirates opened their league campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over newcomers Milford FC and will be eager to maintain that momentum as they begin the defense of the MTN8 trophy they won last season.
The Buccaneers remain one of the most successful clubs in the history of the competition and will be determined to continue their dominance under the guidance of their coaching team.
Their supporters, who have returned to the stadiums in impressive numbers, are expected to fill Orlando Stadium for the eagerly anticipated clash, which kicks off at 3pm.
Durban City, meanwhile, will be aiming to cause one of the biggest upsets of the opening knockout competition. After earning a place among the top eight teams from last season’s Betway Premiership, the KwaZulu-Natal side has an opportunity to announce itself on the big stage against the defending champions.
Later on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns will entertain Polokwane City at Lucas Moripe Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm.
The remaining quarter-final fixtures will take place on Sunday. AmaZulu will host Sekhukhune United at Chatsworth Stadium at 3pm before Kaizer Chiefs welcome Lamontville Golden Arrows to FNB Stadium in the final quarter-final at 6pm.
The MTN8 is traditionally regarded as the curtain-raiser to the domestic knockout competitions, featuring the eight highest-placed clubs from the previous Betway Premiership season.
Last season, Orlando Pirates successfully lifted the trophy after defeating their opponents in the final, continuing their remarkable record in the competition. The Soweto giants also enjoyed an outstanding domestic season, going on to win the Betway Premiership title and establishing themselves as one of the country’s dominant teams.
Pirates will once again rely on several of their standout performers who played a crucial role in last season’s success.
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine and defender Nkosinathi Sibisi continue to provide stability at the back. Midfielders Patrick Maswanganyi and Makhehlene Makhaula are also expected to play influential roles.
Mamelodi Sundowns, runners-up in the league last season, remain among the favourites to challenge for the trophy, while Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Polokwane City and Golden Arrows all believe they have what it takes to go all the way.
This year’s MTN8 features two clubs making notable appearances in the competition. Durban City qualified after an impressive league campaign, while Polokwane City also secured their place among South Africa’s elite after finishing inside the top eight for another successive season.
Clubs that narrowly missedqualificationsn include Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants, who fell just short of finishing in the coveted top-eight positions on the final league standings.
Newly promoted Midlands FC were not eligible after earning promotion only at the end of last season, while other clubs such as Richards Bay also failed to make the cut.
The Premier Soccer League has encouraged supporters to secure their tickets early as large crowds are expected throughout the weekend.
