A South African Police Service (SAPS) sergeant attached to the Giyani K9 Unit has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly opening fire on taxi patrollers who confronted him for allegedly giving members of the public a lift from a hiking spot in Mageva Village, Limpopo.
The 43-year-old officer appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was remanded in custody.
According to police, the confrontation began after an argument over the transportation of passengers from the hiking spot. The dispute allegedly continued near a sports ground, where the officer allegedly discharged a firearm, wounding a 36-year-old man. A second man, aged 31, escaped unharmed.
The injured victim was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
The case was postponed to 11 August 2026 for a formal bail application, with the accused remaining in custody.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers reiterated SAPS’ zero-tolerance stance on criminal conduct involving police officers.
“No member of the South African Police Service is above the law. Any member who is alleged to have committed a criminal offence will be subjected to the full might of the law. We remain committed to upholding the integrity of the organisation and ensuring accountability,” Scheepers said.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
