The corruption case involving suspended Ekurhuleni city manager Kagiso Lerutla and suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been postponed until 21 August 2026.
The postponement was granted after the State asked for additional time to provide the defence with outstanding information relating to the case.
Lerutla and Mkhwanazi appeared briefly in the Boksburg Regional Court on Monday, 13 July 2026.
During proceedings, both legal teams agreed that the outstanding particulars should be handed over to the defence by 31 July 2026.
The accused remain on bail of R30,000 each pending the finalisation of the matter.
They are charged with fraud, corruption and defeating the administration of justice.
Prosecutors allege that Lerutla paid Mkhwanazi R400,000 to secure the services of another individual to appear in court in his place after his 2019 arrest for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
Outside court, Lerutla’s lawyer, Alphy Masenya, said the defence was dissatisfied with the pace at which the prosecution was handling the matter.
“We’re disappointed. It has now been about 30 days, and we’re still waiting for the further particulars we requested.”
Masenya said the outstanding information was essential for the defence to prepare its case.
He argued that the continued delays were prejudicial to his client.
Lerutla and Mkhwanazi were arrested earlier in 2026 during an investigation into alleged corruption involving senior officials at the City of Ekurhuleni.
The matter has generated significant public interest because of the high-ranking positions held by both accused.
It also forms part of broader efforts by law enforcement agencies to investigate alleged corruption within the municipality.
The case will resume in the Boksburg Regional Court on 21 August 2026, by which time the State is expected to have provided the outstanding particulars requested by the defence.
