Former Kaizer Chiefs player Levy Mokgothu has been arrested for allegedly bilking a Sandton drinking establishment out of more than R84 000.
Africa Daily can exclusively reveal that Mokgothu was nabbed by police after allegedly racking up an alcohol bill of R84 161.80 and failing to pay it.
A source, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, alleged that Mokgothu arrived at the joint in Sandton, Joburg, on Sunday with friends.
It is alleged that Mokgothu, who also played for Moroka Swallows, ordered ale and started imbibing.
The deep throat alleged that after several hours, the waiters who had been serving the former footie handed him the bill and asked him to settle the account.
However, the footballer allegedly raised his eyebrows when he saw the amount and told the waiters that he did not have sufficient cash to settle the bill.
According to the mole, the waiters called their supervisor, only known as Mr Sani, to intervene.
After engaging with Mokgothu, Mr Sani allegedly called the police.
The police arrived at the scene and arrested the former soccer star, who was subsequently detained at Sandton Police Station.
The tipster’s version was corroborated by a truncated police statement compiled by Sergeant Shirindza of Sandton Police Station.
In the statement, which Africa Daily has seen, police said they were called to the scene at about 4pm.
“Complainant alleges that on 2026-08-30 at about 04:00 he was on duty. While he was on duty, a customer failed to pay his bill of R84 161.80. He called the police and the suspect was arrested and detained at Sandton Police Station,” reads the statement.
Gauteng police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that Mokgothu had been arrested for bilking and is expected to appear in court today.
“According to a case number provided, a case of bilking has been opened at Sandton on 30 August 2026. A 37-year-old man has been arrested and will appear before the Randburg Magistrate Court on 31 August 2026,” she said.
