The Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA) has confirmed the arrest of one of its ministers in connection with allegations of sexual assault.
In a statement issued by Presiding Bishop Rev Pumla Nzimande, the church said it “unequivocally condemns” all forms of gender-based violence, sexual violence, abuse and harassment.
The MCSA said its immediate concern was the dignity, safety and wellbeing of the complainant and anyone directly harmed or placed at risk.
The church said confidential, trauma-informed pastoral support would be made available to the complainant and their family, while separate pastoral care would also be offered to the arrested minister and their family.
“This does not diminish the seriousness of the alleged harm, create an equivalence between the experiences of the parties, or displace the church’s safeguarding responsibilities,” Nzimande said.
The MCSA said it would cooperate with the relevant authorities while continuing with its own safeguarding, pastoral and disciplinary processes.
The minister has been placed on compulsory leave with immediate effect.
According to the church, the decision was taken to allow the legal proceedings and internal disciplinary processes to run their course.
The MCSA also appealed to its members to refrain from speculation, harassment, intimidation or sharing unverified information while the matter is before the courts.
“As this is an active legal matter, the Church will not comment on the substance of the allegations or the evidence before the court,” Nzimande said.
The church said further communication would be issued through the Office of the Presiding Bishop should developments require a response.
