Former Kaizer Chiefs player Levy Mokgothu has been released on R2500 bail after allegedly bilking a Sandton drinking establishment out of more than R84000.
Mokgothu appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was granted bail and the matter was postponed to 5 October for further investigations.
This was confirmed by NPA South Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole.
“He was granted R2,500 bail and the matter was postponed to 5 October for further investigations,” he said.
Mokgothu was arrested after allegedly racking up an alcohol bill of R84161.80 at a Sandton establishment and failing to settle the account.
According to information received by Africa Daily, Mokgothu was nabbed by police after allegedly enjoying alcohol with friends before being presented with the hefty bill.
A source, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, alleged that Mokgothu arrived at the Sandton, Johannesburg, joint on Sunday with friends.
It is alleged that Mokgothu, who also previously played for Moroka Swallows, ordered alcohol and started liquoring.
The source alleged that after several hours, waiters who had been serving the former footballer handed him the bill and asked him to settle it.
However, the footie allegedly raised his eyebrows when he saw the amount and told the waiters that he did not have enough money to settle the bill.
According to the source, the waiters called their supervisor, only known as Mr Sani, to intervene.
After allegedly engaging with Mokgothu, Mr Sani called the police.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested the former soccer star, who was subsequently detained at Sandton Police Station.
The source’s version was corroborated by a truncated police statement compiled by Sergeant Shirindza of Sandton Police Station.
In the statement, which Africa Daily has seen, police said they were called to the scene at about 4pm.
“Complainant alleges that on 2026-08-30 at about 04:00 he was on duty. While he was on duty, a customer failed to pay his bill of R84 161.80. He called the police and the suspect was arrested and detained at Sandton Police Station,” reads the statement.
