Pirates target league supremacy as Sekhukhune return to Orlando

The Betway Premiership returns on Tuesday night with four matches scheduled across the country, but all eyes will be on the Orlando Amstel Arena where league leaders Orlando Pirates host Sekhukhune United in what promises to be another intriguing chapter between the two sides.

The match, scheduled for 19:30 in Soweto, comes just three days after the Buccaneers defeated Babina Noko 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final. Deon Hotto’s 43rd-minute goal was enough to give Pirates the advantage in the cup tie.

However, Tuesday’s encounter is a completely different battle, with three valuable league points at stake.

Pirates go into the match sitting at the top of the Betway Premiership standings with seven points and will be looking to extend their advantage over Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, who are also on seven points.

The Buccaneers have made an impressive start to the league campaign and will see Tuesday’s home fixture as an opportunity to move clear at the summit.

With the season still in its early stages, every point matters, particularly for the traditional title contenders. A victory for Pirates would give them breathing room at the top and increase the pressure on Chiefs and Sundowns to respond in their next fixtures.

The match also provides Pirates with an opportunity to build further momentum before the decisive second leg of their MTN8 semi-final against Sekhukhune on Saturday.

For Sekhukhune, however, Tuesday presents an immediate opportunity to respond to their weekend disappointment.

Babina Noko will be determined to avoid suffering consecutive defeats against the same opponent in the space of a few days. While the MTN8 tie is still alive ahead of the second leg, a positive league result at Orlando would provide Cédric Kaze’s team with a much-needed psychological boost.

Kaze has already acknowledged the difficulty of facing Pirates three times in a short period. He has insisted that his team must approach each match separately, pointing out that Tuesday’s league fixture is not a knockout game and that there are still many matches remaining in the campaign.

The familiarity between the two teams could make for another tactical contest.

Pirates will know that Sekhukhune are likely to be more aggressive after losing the MTN8 first leg, while the visitors will be aware that the Buccaneers are capable of hurting them in transition.

The Soweto giants will also have the backing of their home supporters as they attempt to maintain their position at the top of the table.

For Sekhukhune, the objective will be to frustrate the hosts, take their opportunities and return to Limpopo with maximum points.

The match therefore carries significance beyond the three points. It is also a psychological battle between two teams that will meet again in the MTN8 semi-final second leg only four days later.

Pirates have the advantage in that cup tie, but Sekhukhune can change the mood around the fixture with a league victory on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s other Betway Premiership fixtures

Four matches are scheduled for Tuesday evening, all kicking off at 19:30.

Kruger United vs Durban City
Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit

Newly promoted Kruger United will welcome Durban City to the Mbombela Stadium as both sides search for valuable points early in the season.

Marumo Gallants vs TS Galaxy
Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg

Marumo Gallants host TS Galaxy in another 19:30 encounter. Both teams will be eager to strengthen their positions and build momentum as the campaign develops.

Orlando Pirates vs Sekhukhune United
Orlando Amstel Arena, Soweto

The headline fixture of the night sees the league leaders meet Sekhukhune again, just days after their MTN8 semi-final first-leg clash.

Siwelele vs Chippa United
Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein

Siwelele will host Chippa United in Bloemfontein in the fourth fixture on Tuesday’s programme.

With all four matches scheduled for 19:30, the Tuesday night programme promises another important round of action in the early Betway Premiership title and relegation battles.

For Pirates, though, the equation is simple: win against Sekhukhune and strengthen their grip on top spot before turning their attention back to the MTN8.
